Steve Cooley Races To The Finish Line To Become The Attorney General For California

Republican Steve Cooley was mocked for declaring an early victory in the California Attorney General race on November 2, 2010. Liberal Kamala Harris, also known as “The Female Obama,” followed by prematurely declaring victory as the next Attorney General for California. It looks like Cooley will have the last laugh as he races towards the finish line.

According to the California Secretary of State, as of November 7, 2010, Cooley is leading Harris 46.1% to 45.6%. There are many ballots that have yet to be counted, however, Cooley is currently leading by about 36,800 votes. Cooley has been gaining votes and moving farther ahead of Harris day by day. Cooley may very well win decisively.

Cooley is what California needs as he shows character and stability. Cooley is a conservative who has fought as a prosecutor for over 37 years and has been married for over 30 years. Cooley is a fighter who is tough on crime and has high values. We already have an extreme liberal for Governor and the last thing we need is an extreme liberal as our next Attorney General.

Reasons to Hire a Car Accident Attorney

Car AccidentLet’s face it, a car accident can be a very scary situation.  Many victims in a car accident have never been in such a situation.  Your car may have been damaged or even totaled.  You may have minor injuries or even broken bones.  You may have even come close to death.  Some people may not feel pain until months later.  Whatever the case may be, after a car accident, there are too many variables for you to try to handle yourself.  You need the assistance of a good attorney to fight for your rights and ensure that you are adequately compensated and get the proper medical treatment.

Many people try to handle their personal injury claim themselves.  However, they don’t realize that claim adjusters are professional negotiators whose primary goal is to get injured victims to settle for as little as possible.  Sometimes it is even difficult for an attorney to negotiate a proper settlement without actually filing a lawsuit.  A lawsuit usually gets the insurance company’s attention.  It is not unusual for a car insurance company to initially only offer $500.00 to $5,000.00 and turn around and offer $15,000.00 after the injured party’s attorney has filed a lawsuit.  The reason is simply because a car insurance company may spend $5,000.00-$10,000.00 on attorney fees defending a lawsuit and it may be more cost efficient to settle the case.

Medical bills are another reason to hire a personal injury attorney.  If you are injured in a car accident and require immediate medical care, the ambulance and emergency room bills alone may easily total more than $12,000.00.  In California, people are only lawfully required to carry $15,000.00 (per person) of personal injury liability insurance.  You will additionally have future medical bills for treatment and the $15,000.00 will not be enough.  Attorneys are experts at negotiating on your behalf and can possibly get your medical bills settled for a fraction of the actual bill and leave you with thousands in your pocket for pain and suffering.

These are just a few reasons to hire a car accident attorney.  There are several other reasons such as the fact that attorneys are able to have doctors treat you on liens which do not have to be paid until your personal injury case is settled.  Lack of money should never be a reason for you not to hire a personal injury attorney because there is no money required up front and the attorney does not get paid unless you get paid.  If you are interested in hiring a personal injury attorney, call us at (909) 641-4762 and we will have an attorney in our network represent you.

The Difference Between a Paralegal and a Legal Document Assistant (LDA)

DivorceThere are many misconceptions about what a paralegal actually is and what services they can provide.  On the other hand, many people have never even heard of a Legal Document Assistant (LDA).  Paralegals and Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) both provide legal services and are prevented from giving legal advice or counsel.

You may have heard companies, such as “John’s Paralegal Service,” advertise legal services directly to the public.  The fact of the matter is that paralegals cannot provide legal services directly to the public.  A paralegal can only provide legal services for an attorney or under direct attorney supervision.  Before the law changed in California in 1998, it was fair game for “Independent Paralegals” or “Freelance Paralegals” to provide legal services directly to the public.

The Legal Document Assistant profession was birthed in California on September 30, 1998 when Governor Pete Wilson signed California State Bill SB1418 into law which regulated the legal document preparation profession.  The new legislation forced independent and freelance paralegals to get registered by the county in which they conducted business in and carry a $25,000.00 bond.  Legal Document Assistants (LDA) are specifically permitted to provide direct legal services, without attorney supervision, to the general public.  The legislation also forced individuals wanting to become a Legal Document Assistant (LDA) to meet strict education and work experience qualifications.  Although Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) can work directly with the public, they often contract with attorneys on a case by case basis.

All in all, the difference between paralegals and Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) are vast.  Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) are a step above a paralegal due to the stricter qualification guidelines and the Legal Document Assistant’s ability to work directly with the public.  In addition, a Legal Document Assistant (LDA) carries a $25,000.00 bond due to the high stake services they provide, and paralegals do not.  So if you are in need of a low cost alternative to an attorney, be sure to choose a qualified, registered, and bonded Legal Document Assistant (LDA).
